This is trivia, not a riddle

A mother told her six-year-old daughter that her dog had been hit by a car and died. The little girl burst into tears. Half an hour later, the mother told her daughter the dog had not been hit by a car and was just fine. Why did the mother tell her daughter this? (and who was the daughter?)

  1. This is reportedly a story about Shirley Temple and her mother. Apparently, the scene called for sadness and tears, so the mother lied to Shirley, making her cry.

  2. Joke would have been on her if they arrived home that afternoon and their dog really was dead. HEHEHE
