Why round?

Here's a trivia question for you. Why are manhole covers round and not square?

  1. So the cover doesn't fall through the hole?

  2. That's right, Andrew. Square covers can fall down the hole they are covering. But no matter how you turn a round cover, the diameter will never be shorter than the hole.
