Simple logic

Nick, Sean and Rhonda went shopping together for music on Saturday and Sunday. The CDs they purchased are either jazz or rock. When they visit the store, each person will purchase one (and one only) CD.

1) Either Sean or Rhonda will pick rock, but not both of them.
2) If Sean picks rock, Nick picks jazz
3) Nick and Rhonda do not pick jazz.

Which one of the three purchased a jazz CD on Saturday and a rock CD on Sunday?

  1. All Three picked rock, because it's a simple fact that nobody buys jazz. Of course, the real answer is that nobody buys CDs. They just downloaded the music illegally.

  2. What I can determine is that Sean picks Jazz because if he picks Rock rules 1 & 2 make Nick and Rhonda choose Jazz and that goes against rule 3. So Sean picks Jazz, Rhonda picks Rock (rule 1). I’m guessing Nick picks Rock, more because of the previous comment because there is no rule to say that he couldn’t have also chosen Jazz. As for the day they bought the CD’s on, I have no idea!

  3. This was hard, in part, due to unspecific wording. Each will buy 2 cds, one saturday and one sunday?

Nick doesn't pick jazz (3), so Sean mustn't have chosen rock (2), so Rhonda must choose rock. It looks like these are absolute and count for both days.

So from Nick and Sean, who could buy one rock CD and one jazz CD? Not Nick (3).

    Must be Sean

    1) Either Sean or Rhonda will pick rock, but not both of them.
    2) If Sean picks rock, Nick picks jazz
    3) Nick and Rhonda do not pick jazz.

  4. Nick.

If Sean picks rock, then Rhonda must pick jazz and Nick must pick jazz. This contradicts 3) so Sean is out.
If Rhonda picks jazz then Sean must pick rock and again we have a contradiction.

Sorry for the inspecific wording. Perhaps if I had written Nick and Rhonda do not pick jazz on the same day?
