So here you are, in a strange place and you've lost your watch. You stop a stranger to ask what time it is and he turns out to be even stranger than the place. His answer goes like this:

"The big hand and the little hand are midway between 1 and 2, lying on top of each other."

So, now you need to figure out what time it is.

It could be 12 noon, which would put the two hands on top of each other in between a 1 and a 2 (12).

ReplyDeleteThe way I would have done it is to set up an equation to determine at exactly what time the hour and minute hands would pass each other. The fraction of the minutes divided by 60 has to be same fraction that the hour hand is between 1 and 2. Below, x represents the number of minutes, so 1 + the fraction of minutes in that hour equals the number of minutes divided by 5 (to account that the minute hand sees each hash as 5 and the hour hand sees it as 1).

1 + x / 60 = x / 5

x = 5.45454545

so, the time is 1:05 and 27.2727 seconds exactly.

Wow, Abe. You would think that would be easier to do. I was looking for the hands lying between the 1 and 2 at 12 noon.
