Color the Chess Board

You can cover all 64 squares on a chess board with 32 dominoes. Take out the two corners (a8 and h1) and try to cover the board with 31 dominoes. It will never work.

Which color do the leftover squares always end up being?

  1. Black. Each domino covers one white and one black square, so if you remove two white squares from a balanced board, you'll have two extra black squares after eliminating matches.
