Come Out of the Earth

I come out of the earth, I am sold in the market. He who buys me cuts my tail, takes off my suit of silk, and weeps beside me when I am dead. What am I?

  1. This is an awesome riddle! I had some fun and re-wrote it to make it into a poem:

You cut off my tail, yet nothing I have bled.
You cut open my skin for my meat instead,
and weep beside me when I am dead.

  2. i like the re-written poem version because it sounds so macabre, and it's nice and misleading because the answer is so simple an innocent.
