A Lowly Thing

I am just a lowly thing, object of much derision,
I am odd because I multiply by division.

What am I?

  1. Could be a bacterium. They reproduce (multiply) by cell division... And bacteria certainly have a negative connotation, meaning they would be he object of derision. And they are certainly low on the food chain and phylogeny chart since they are so primitive, which would give meaning to the "lowly creature" statement.

What was the answer to the water and wine question from last week?

  2. I was thinking amoeba, but we're basically thinking the same thing.

I did go back and answer the water and wine question from last week, thank you for reminding me.
