Words in Common

Here are some words that belong; BY, LO, but neither HIGH nor LOW do.

GRIT, GIRT AND TRIG all fit in. SO does HOVELS, but not SHOVEL.
VOLE fits, but LOVE does not.

Have I given you enough clues? Can you tell me which of the following belongs? Only one!

WIZARD, MAGICIAN, MEDIUM or MAGIC?

  2. Which means I probably stated the question wrong! ;-)

    But here's my answer:
    WIZARD belongs to the group.

The group contains words with symmetrically distributed letters.
For example, in VOLE, the first and last letters, V and E, are equidistant from the centre of the alphabet, as are the middle two letters, O and L. However, LOVE does not belong because the L and E are not equidistant; neither are the O and V. GRIT, GIRT and TRIG all work because GT are equidistant as well as IR.

Here are all pairs of equidistant letters:
    AZ
    BY
    CX
    DW
    EV
    FU
    GT
    HS
    IR
    JQ
    KP
    LO
    MN
