Find the Pattern in the Numbers

What number should logically replace the question mark?

7
17
8 1/2
14 1/4
10
11 1/2
?

Sorry about the formatting.  I don't know how to get 1/2 to look right.  To be clear, if I was using decimals, the third number is 8.5, then the next number is 14.25.

  1. ans is 11 1/2

    7 + 1.5 = 8 1/2 ; 17 - 2.75 = 14.25
    8.5 + 1.5 = 10 ; 14.25 - 2.75 = 11.5
    10 + 1.5 = 11.5 ;

  3. Very cool, thanks Howie!

    The answer is 11½. The pattern is skipping every other number, so that it goes 7, 8½, 10, 11½; and the other pattern is heading down, 17, 14¼, 11½, ...
