Riddle me this?

Mates unbalanced,
Or so they seem;
But paired in tandem,
A deadly team.

She so gently round,
Him so firm and straight,
Yet when they are compounded,
Woe to them they hate.

    my guesses are either a cannon & ball, or baseball and bat.

    I would have said bow and arrow.

    I'm not sure about the bullet to rifle because I'm not sure how 'round' a bullet is, but like I said, I'm not sure.

    I hope a baseball and bat aren't deadly! ;-) But I would have to say cannon and ball are a good combo for this riddle.

    The actual answer is a bow and arrow. Or, at least, that's the historical answer. But as with most riddles, multiple answers are possible.
